Medicinal Genomics Corp. (MGC), a pioneer in harnessing cannabis genomics to improve the agricultural productivity, safety, and transparency of cannabis, today announced an agreement with Soquimica to be its distribution partner in Portugal. Soquimica is recognized as the premier equipment and services distributor for research and clinical laboratories serving Portugal’s life sciences, environment, and chemical industries.
“We are delighted to start working with Medicinal Genomics and to bring their testing solutions to the Portuguese market. The cannabis industry is growing worldwide and also in Portugal, where many companies have started new business units dedicated to this market. Soquimica offers several quality control solutions to these companies and the Medicinal Genomics products are an important addition to our portfolio involving microbial safety testing, early-detection plant screening, DNA purification and genetic sequencing.” Rita Gonçalves, General Manager, Soquimica.
Portugal is one of the most important and fastest-growing cannabis markets in Europe, and one of the most unique. Drugs were decriminalized there twenty years ago, and medical cannabis was legalized in 2018, approved for a range of conditions from MS and epilepsy to therapeutic-resistant glaucoma and chronic pain. It is planned that medical cannabis will be available to patients from pharmacies throughout the country in April 2021. Portugal’s climate is similar to California’s, and the favorable growing conditions, reasonably priced labor, and progressive regulations have attracted investment from some of the world’s largest cannabis firms, including Flowr, Aurora, and Tilray. Much of the production from these investments will ensure country-wide supply, as well as exports serving the booming German medicinal cannabis market.
“We’re very pleased to be able to work with Soquimica to bring our advanced technology to the important and rapidly growing Portuguese market,” said Brendan McKernan, Medicinal Genomics CEO. “Their reputation and knowledge of the market, the players, and the needs of customers are second to none. They’re the right partner for us because our mutual goals for growth and quality of service are completely aligned. We look forward to working with them to advance to state of the art of Portugal’s cannabis industry.”
